| How the K1 Visa Process Works: To bring a future spouse to the USA, a U.S. citizen must first file a K-1 Visa petition in the United States with the Department of Homeland Security. Once the petition is approved, the petition is then forwarded to the United States Consulate in the country where the foreign fiancee resides. The U.S. Consulate will then contact the foreign fiancee and set up an interview date shortly thereafter. K1 Visas. Prior to the interview, the foreign fiancee will be required to have a medical exam. In most cases, the medical exam can be scheduled a couple of days ahead of the interview. The fiancee attends the interview, and a visa will be issued within 1-3 days, depending on the specific country. After receiving the K1 visa, the foreign fiancee has up to six months to exercise the use the visa to travel to the USA. Arriving in the USA K1 fiancee visa holders are in valid status for only 90 days after U.S. entry, and may not extend their status. Note: Your spouse must obtain advance parole before any travel outside of the USA, or he/she will not be allowed re-entry. In that event, you would then have to file a spousal visa petition in order to allow your spouse to return to the United States.
